What kinds of meningitis do you have?

Meningitis is a disease during which the brain membranes (the cerebral membranes and subarachnoid space) become inflamed. It is caused by viruses and bacteria and, depending on this, the course of the disease also occurs.

In any case, it is a dangerous disease that requires medical treatment. It can lead to infection of the bloodstream or brain system and sepsis, which ends in death, as Dr. Denis Slinkin says.

Dr. Denis Slinkin believes that bacterial meningitis is heavier. If this form is diagnosed, the patient needs urgent medical attention. Patients with viral meningitis have milder symptoms and course of the disease, but treatment is also in the hospital. Dr. Denis Slinkin says the etiology of meningitis varies. Let’s look at the main causes of the disease.

Dr. Denis Slinkin

It’s viral. Most often caused by enteroviruses, parotitis virus, flaviviruses, varicella zoster virus, herpes simplex virus. Less often the cause of the disease may be cytomegalovirus, adenoviruses, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, HIV, Epstein-Barr virus.

Symptoms are similar to influenza, signs of meningitis in the form of headache appear a few days later. The course of the disease is not very severe.

It’s bacterial. This type of meningitis occurs when various bacteria enter the body: meningococcus, hemophilus bacillus, streptococcus, in rare cases Escherichia coli, klebsiella. The course of the disease is rapid, acute, all symptoms appear in one day.

Pus. Any bacterial lesion of the body can spill into purulent meningitis. Most often the disease was preceded by infection with hemophilic bacillus, meningococcus and pneumococcus. The appearance of purulent meningitis in newborns is often provoked by streptococcal infections, E. coli and salmonellosis.

Tuberculosis. The first symptoms are fever, and after a few days, vomiting and severe headache occur. The brain is only affected after two weeks.

Meningococcal. It’s caused by Neisseria meningitidis entering the human body. Signs of this type of meningitis: hemorrhagic rash, fever and chills. There are acute inflammatory changes in the blood.
